Perry had returned to Marion, IN in 1988 to find her grandmother's house in such disrepair that her foot fell through the porch when she rang the bell. The house had been abandoned. She decided to buy the house in 1991 after researching her grandmother's life and discovering the extent to which she had affected the culture of American quilting.
